Through this program’s incredible success, twelve EDN! chapters have sprouted throughout the nation, but to our surprise, one of the nation’s most populated cities had not made the list. Chicago, IL has struggling public school systems, a large population at or under poverty level, and has a high rate of gang involvement for teens as young as nine or ten years old. From this need, Sophia Horwich was motivated to create a chapter here in Chicago, and was named Chicago Director in May 2012. After much preparation, EDN!C began its pilot program at two Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago locations at the end of October 2012. On February of 2013, EDN!C accomplished its lofty goal of more than quadrupling the size of classes offered. As of June 2013, EDN!C has offered 8 different classes a week at 7 different locations. The chapter plans to branch out to two additional locations in the coming fall.
EDN!C has also received much attention from local press, such as WBEZ, WGN TV, WGN Radio, and the Chicago Tribune! The chapter hopes to continue to receive the warm welcome from their community that they have gotten thus far!
